YEXT Citations Overview
Local Citations (Yext) Setup & Ongoing Optimization
This guide explains how Plastix Marketing manages local citations using Yext, why they matter for local SEO, and what (if anything) you need to do.
What are local citations (and why they matter)?
A local citation is an online directory listing that includes your practice’s key business details—especially:
- Practice name
- Address
- Phone number
- Website URL
- Hours
Search engines want to see your information listed consistently across the internet. When your name, address, and phone number (often called NAP) matches everywhere, it builds trust and supports stronger local visibility.
Citations also provide value because many directories include a link to your website—similar to a lightweight backlink from a reputable listing source.
That’s why citations remain an ongoing part of Plastix Marketing’s Local SEO packages.
The tool we use: Yext
Plastix Marketing uses Yext to syndicate your business information across a wide network of directory sites and platforms.
Inside Yext, we can:
- Sync your listings across multiple directories
- Track listing status and “listing scores”
- Make fast global updates (hours, descriptions, branding assets, etc.)
- Monitor for issues like rejected listings or duplicates
What you’ll see in Yext (at a high level)
Within Yext’s Local SEO section, you can typically view:
- Which listings are synced/submitted
- Listing status (live, pending, rejected)
- Listing scores/health indicators
- Directory coverage (where your information is being published)
Why some listings show “Rejected”
Occasionally, a listing may be marked rejected by the directory source itself. This can happen for a few reasons, including:
- The directory doesn’t support your business type or category
- That specific listing source isn’t available for your practice/location
- The directory has its own submission rules or verification requirements
This is normal and is handled during ongoing optimization.
Expanding visibility to voice + AI platforms
Directory coverage has expanded beyond traditional websites. Over time, Yext has added platforms that support:
- Voice search discovery (ex: Siri, Alexa)
- Local AI search discovery (newer platform connections as they become available)
When new listing partners become available inside Yext, Plastix Marketing includes them as part of ongoing optimization to keep your practice positioned for evolving search behavior.
How we set up your Yext profile
Most of the information needed to set up Yext is collected in your onboarding form. This typically includes:
- Business name, address, phone number
- Website URL
- Primary categories/services
- Hours of operation
- Other key business details used in directory listings
Google Business Profile connection
Yext is typically connected to your Google Business Profile so we can keep information aligned and synced. We’ll request the access we need during our normal onboarding process.
What we can manage and enhance inside Yext
Yext allows us to create a stronger, “enhanced” listing profile by adding more complete information—across every directory where you appear.
Common items we manage include:
Business information and keywords
- Services offered
- Brands carried
Short and long business descriptions
These often help reinforce relevance and consistency for local SEO.
Hours (including holidays)
- Standard hours
- Special hours (holidays, closures, seasonal adjustments)
A major benefit: you can update special hours once, and Yext pushes that update across directories quickly—rather than editing listings one-by-one.
Images and branding
- Primary logo
- Cover images
- Optional gallery images (when supported by the directory)
Social links and content connections
- Social profile links
- Blog link (when applicable)
Professional and business identifiers
When relevant, we can add professional details such as:
- NPI (or similar identifiers)
Attributes
Some directories (including major platforms) support additional attributes that can appear in listings—these vary by platform but can help create a richer profile.
Ongoing optimization: what Plastix Marketing does for you
Citations are not a “set it and forget it” channel—directory networks and search platforms change over time. As part of ongoing Local SEO work, Plastix Marketing will typically:
Add new listing sources as Yext releases them
Update citations by improving/refreshing listing data and associated links
Monitor and help suppress duplicate listings
- This can occur from older listings tied to previous locations, old phone numbers, or outdated directory entries
The goal is to keep everything accurate, consistent, and trusted across the web.
What you need to do (usually very little)
For most customers, there’s not much required after onboarding.
Typically, your responsibilities are:
- Complete the onboarding form accurately
- Provide access to Google Business Profile when requested (as part of the normal setup process)
- Notify us if your business details change (address, phone number, name, hours)
Plastix Marketing handles the rest.
The takeaway
Yext is a powerful tool that helps ensure your practice information is:
- Listed correctly across the internet
- Consistent across directories
- Easy to update quickly (especially hours)
- Positioned for search—including emerging voice and AI-driven discovery
